There ius a cost to upgrade

Kia ora tatou:

Sometime, while we were away in the Maniototo teaching the Wedderburn workshops, the blog turned 200..thousand hits that is. A big BIG thank you to all of you who pass by and have a look, and occasionally comment. An especial thanks to those who offer what they know as well.
The Wedderburn workshops are now over for the year, but we are working on new ones. More information as they become available. It was a real joy to work with such talented people. As soon as I work out how to do it, I will upload samples of the work from the workshops for the rest of you to see. Apparently it was the wettest winter in 40 years, but nothing compared to the carnage the rest of the country experienced. I am told that that the new architectural style in Greymouth is the bunker look.
Well it is finally out. Lightroom 2 is now available. I have downloaded it and begun using it. Unlike Beta 2, most of the bugs have been ironed out ( I say Most), and there are some very cool features in it. Things I like include:

    • support for dual monitors
    • referencing folders by hard drive number
    • the adjustment brush
    • smart collections
    • better sharpening and noise reduction
    • camera profiling

and more…. It may be me, but both my laptop ( T7200 dual-core, 2 Gb RAM, 2 x 250 Gb Sata drives) and my desktop ( Q6600 quad-core, 4Gb RAM, 8x 500GB SATA drives) find it resource-hungry. Can’t wait for the first update!

There is a cost to go from V1 to V2. An upgrade is around $NZ180, depending on where you shop. A full education version is around the same price . Shop around. I suggest Kiwis look here.

Apparently Britons find digital cameras the most difficult device to master in a survey conducted by Revoo.com. Curiously, washing machines come in a t #4, and microwaves at #10. Read more here.

I am currently sifting through the more than 3500 1DS Mk III files I shot during the two weeks. Stories and images to follow.

Tony it’s good to have you back.
Now I know how the cat feels when we go away for a week, a bit lonely! About 25000 of those site hits were me looking for a Bridge fix!
But…sigh…nothing changes, you’re straight back on about your PC problems as soon as you get home.
I’m liking Lightroom 2, same reasons as you Tony mostly, but I think I may finally make sense of my image collection with this baby. Certainly a resource pig when you start playing with the new gradient tool and brush. I’m working my way through the Reichmann/Schewe guide and Schewe says ‘you can’t use the brush the way you’re used to in PS’, yeah you’re right there buddy, we’ve got Macs, how do you think Tony Bridge feels!
Be quite keen to see what’s happening with this 1DsIII of yours, you’ve been very quiet about it all and it might be time to hush the crowds with some commentary soon you think? I’m sure you will know when the time is right.
Anyhow, great to see you back in cyberspace and look forward to the next round of stimulation at thistonybridge.com.
    Andrew

Oooh I was so jealous knowing that Russell was having fun and inspiration! I’ve loaded Lightroom 2 as my first foray into Lightroom and have found a few little frustrations having been used to Bridge & ACR (appears not so easy to move files around??? maybe I just have to learn how??). Interesting to see the comments about resource hungry… have definitely noticed those (a good few impatience prompted crashes later), but there are some areas it definitely excels over the clunky cousin; clarity & sharpening, the fine adjustments and having the extra options are lovely. So far though it feels as though the recovery option is not as useful as the ACR version, particularly for me who, since Adobe ambassadors advocated pushing exposure to the light end, has been over exposing by 1/3 to 2/3 stops. Using Photo RGB is great but think my storage is not going to love me for the bulky files now!!

I’ve been inspired while you’ve been away, and have just found a bonus for Canon… thought I’d get a good thermally feel to my thermal prints by soaking them in sulphur laden water and was looking forward to some interesting ink run effects… what’d I get??? Big fat ZIP! Pigment ink, Canon art paper, sulphurous water (and mud, it just brushes off!!) and not the slightest bit of difference to my prints!! Trying the plastic bag trick now, hoping that maybe the gases will do something, not much hope of success though.

Have to say that probably another 25,000 hits have been me looking for my Bridge fix too!!

Good to have you back, Cheers, Jen :)

I had Wedderburn withdrawal too. It’s pretty sick that with the perfect days here the last few weeks I have been pining to stand on a hill in the freezing cold at sparrows fart hunched over a tripod!

megs last blog post..Strange Happenings at the Vale ni Kana…

Just remembered one semi major suspect issue in LR2. I do a lot of printing with a Mitsubishi dye sub at 4 X 6 and 5 X 7, the 2 beta printed beautifully but in the release it’s like the file rendering is up the whopper when it resizes and it produces prints with jaggies and funky rendering. I’ve played with sharpening and res but haven’t got it optimal yet. The workflow for this type of printing is brilliant, just have to sort this hiccup. Any ideas anyone?

    Hi Andrew:
many thanks for your interest in the blog. I try….
As for the 1Ds III, I am impressed…so far. Do you guys really want a user report? As for printing out of LR, I didn’t really bother in LR 1.x, as I had trouble getting it to do a great job, even an OK one. I am not surprised about issues in 2.0, and I have heard of things like this. You might have a look on the forums.I did mention bugs in the post, and I wasn’t referring to OS-related ones! My Prograf 6100 has a superb 16-bit CS3 plugin and I tend to print out of that, rather than trying to get LR to play the game…
    Jenny:
glad to be back, although I am on the road a bit at present. Tomorrow in AKL, next week in Tauranga. You man doesn’t want to lend me the Maloo for a few days???? I agree about the recovery. ACR is better a t pulling it out. However I use both together, doing some of the develop in LR and finishing it in CS3, even coming back for final tweaking to CS.
Note that LR now supports native 64 bit OS, so you can use XP 64 or Vista 64 if you wish and it takes advantage of multi-core processors. CS4, due son, will also support 64-bit computing (and cross the 3.5 GB RAM barrier for WinOS).
    Meg:
yes, you needed to be there. In fact the weather was much warmer than last year and we only had one fieldtrip that was so cold my mouth had trouble trying to speak. Hard to believe, eh?
Pics on blog as I have time. Sorry we passed each other in the night!

  6. BB Says:

    Hi Tony
Welcome back - and many of those hits were me too! Here’s a basic question about LR2 - resource hungry you say! Would my three year old laptop with XP and 2G ram and extra DVD ram cope? Sadly am not about to upgrade computers at the moment! One of my biggest problems with playing with LR1.* was coping with catalogues etc. so I haven’t been using it much preferring ACR in CS3! So you might have to help me next year with sorting that one out!!! I did see one of the Adobe connect tutorials use LR2 and the adjustment brush did look superb! Cheers

  7. Tony Bridge Says:

    Hi BB:
I note that it is hungry. HOWEVER it includes a 64-bit installer, so it will run faster on XP 64, Vista 64 and, I presume, Leopard. It has also been optimised for multi-core processors. Apparently adobe intend to offload more of the work to the GPU ( graphics processing unit-read: video card) in the future, so you now have an excuse to buy that gamers card ( of course none of you play Crysis or flight sim, do you?)

  8. JW Says:

I’ve been playing with LR2 and love it.. but man it’s slow!.. and reading through the assorted threads it sounds like it’s not to keen on AMD processors! The brushes also seem slow, I’m trying to use one of those wacom tablets with it and it’s nae fun! so have resorted back to LR1.41 just now.
On your comment on Britons finding digital hard… I’m sure you mean English people right?

  9. Tony Bridge Says:

    John:
Not sure about AMD’s…I’ma an Intel man myself!
    Of course I meant the English…of course I did…and maybe the Manx…
